A healthier take on the classic blooming onion, air-fried to golden perfection and bursting with flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet onion (like Vidalia or Walla Walla)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko)
  • Cooking spray
  • Dipping sauce of your choice

Instructions

  1. Prepare the onion by slicing off the top and peeling the outer skin.
  2. Make petal-like cuts in the onion, ensuring not to slice fully through the bottom.
  3. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper in a bowl.
  4. Soak the onion in buttermilk, making sure each petal is fully immersed.
  5. Coat the onion in the flour mixture thoroughly.
  6. Double dip in buttermilk and roll in breadcrumbs for extra crunch.
  7. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

Pair with zesty ranch dressing or spicy sriracha mayo. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2 days.
