Delightful apple crisp bars with a buttery shortbread base, perfect for autumn gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups peeled and diced apples (tart variety like Granny Smith)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. Mix together the flour, softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, salt, and vanilla extract until crumbly.
  3. Press half of this crumbly mixture into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  4. Combine the diced apples with cinnamon and spread over the crust.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture over the apples. Optionally add rolled oats and chopped nuts.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and apples are tender.
  7. Cool before cutting into bars.

Notes

These bars can be enjoyed warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
