A rich and creamy caramelized onion dip that’s perfect for gatherings and pairs beautifully with various dippers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons Butter
  • 1 tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 3 large Sweet Onions
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 8 ounces Cream Cheese
  • ¾ cup Sour Cream
  • ¾ cup Mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 3 tablespoons Fresh Chives, divided

Instructions

  1. Melt butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat, allowing the mixture to combine and become fragrant.
  2. Add sliced onions to the skillet; cook slowly for 40-45 minutes until they become a deep caramel brown, stirring occasionally to ensure they cook evenly.
  3. Once the onions have caramelized beautifully, season them with kosher salt and black pepper; then stir in Worcestershire sauce to add a depth of flavor and savoriness.
  4. Reserve some caramelized onions for garnish, letting them cool slightly while you prepare the cream cheese mixture.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise until smooth, creating the indulgent base for your dip.
  6. Add garlic powder and chopped chives to the cream mixture and combine thoroughly for added flavor.
  7. Gently fold in the cooled caramelized onions into the creamy mixture, ensuring the sweetness is evenly dispersed throughout.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a serving bowl, cover, and chill in the fridge for at least one hour before serving to let the flavors meld beautifully.

Notes

For a vegan version, substitute cream cheese with vegan cream cheese and use plant-based mayonnaise. This dip can also be made a day ahead for convenience.
