Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of French bread
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Whisk the eggs, heavy cream, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well blended.
  2. Slice the French bread into thick pieces and arrange in a baking dish.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread slices, ensuring each piece is soaked.
  4. Cover the dish tightly and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Bake the soaked bread for 30-35 minutes until golden and set.
  7. Sprinkle a layer of brown sugar on top of the toast.
  8. Caramelize the sugar using a kitchen torch until golden and crispy.
  9. Serve warm with optional toppings and enjoy!

Notes

For a flavor twist, consider adding cinnamon or nutmeg to the egg mixture. You can also use regular bread, but French bread absorbs the custard better.
