Experience the joy of making delicious homemade bagels that are fresh, chewy, and customizable with your favorite toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon malt syrup (optional)
  • Toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the yeast mixture: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Combine ingredients: Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, then mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Shape the bagels: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and make a hole in the center.
  7. Boil the bagels: Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add malt syrup if using. Boil bagels in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side.
  8. Bake the bagels: Sprinkle toppings on bagels and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let them cool before enjoying.

Notes

Store leftover bagels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage. Brush with an egg wash for a shinier crust.
