Delicious homemade pretzel bites that are perfectly chewy on the outside and soft on the inside, served with a zesty mustard dip.

Ingredients

  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 and 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)
  • Mustard or cheese sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix the dough: Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead to perfection: Knead the dough for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  4. Let it rise: Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Prepare the baking soda bath: In a pot, bring water to a boil and add baking soda.
  7. Shape the dough: Divide the dough into small pieces and shape them into balls.
  8. Boil the pretzel bites: Boil each pretzel bite in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds.
  9. Egg wash: Brush each bite with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  10. Bake to golden perfection: Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Serve and enjoy: Serve warm with mustard or cheese sauce for dipping.

Notes

For best results, ensure your water is not too hot when activating the yeast. These pretzel bites can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
