Deliciously soft and gooey sourdough cinnamon rolls, elevated with a sweet cream cheese frosting, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups sourdough starter
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon (for filling)
  • 1/2 cup cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine the wet ingredients: In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter, melted butter, milk, eggs, sugar, salt, and cinnamon until well combined.
  2. Create the dough: Gradually add flour until a soft dough forms. Knead this dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes.
  3. Let the dough rise: Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a warm cloth, and let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
  4. Roll out the dough: Once risen, roll the dough out into a large rectangle on a floured surface.
  5. Prepare the filling: Evenly spread the brown sugar and cinnamon filling over the dough.
  6. Roll and slice: Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice it gently into approximately 12 even rolls.
  7. Second rise: Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover them with a cloth, and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  8. Bake to perfection: Bake the rolls in the preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes.
  9. Whip up the frosting: Prepare the cream cheese frosting by mixing softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
  10. Frost and enjoy: Once the rolls have cooled slightly, slather the frosting generously over the top.

Notes

For a variation, try adding nuts or dried fruit to the filling. These rolls can be prepared the night before for convenience.
