A comforting bowl of homemade split pea soup featuring earthy split peas, tender veggies, and a hearty ham bone.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups green split peas
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 potatoes, diced
  • 8 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Rinse the split peas under cold water to remove any debris.
  2. Combine the rinsed split peas, ham bone, diced carrots, onion, potatoes, and broth in a large pot.
  3. Bring the pot over medium-high heat and bring the soup to a boil.
  4. Simmer by reducing heat to a gentle simmer and covering the pot, cooking for 60 to 90 minutes.
  5. Shred the ham from the bone and stir it back into the pot.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Serve hot, garnished with freshly chopped herbs, if desired.

Notes

Pairs well with warm crusty bread or grilled cheese sandwiches. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
