Delicious onion jam made from caramelized onions, balsamic vinegar, and brown sugar, perfect for dressings, sandwiches, and spreading on artisanal bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, add the olive oil and heat it over medium heat. Once hot, toss in the thinly sliced onions.
  2. Cook the onions, stirring occasionally, until they soften and begin to caramelize, which should take about 20-30 minutes. Keep an eye on them!
  3. After the onions are caramelized, stir in the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. Cook for another 15 minutes, stirring frequently.
  4. Once thickened, season your onion jam with salt and black pepper to taste.
  5. Transfer warm jam into sterilized jars, cool completely before sealing, or store in the refrigerator.

Notes

For best results, cook the onions low and slow to achieve a deep rich color and flavor. This jam can be stored for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.
