A delightful and easy make-ahead breakfast casserole that captures the flavors of traditional French toast.

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Maple syrup and powdered sugar for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Baking Dish: Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Cube the Bread: Cut the loaf of bread into cubes, about 1-inch in size, and place evenly in the greased dish.
  3. Whisk the Custard Mixture: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Soak the Bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently.
  5. Refrigerate Overnight: Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Preheat the Oven: In the morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and let the casserole sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  7. Bake to Perfection: Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  8. Serve Warm: Allow to rest for a few minutes before serving with syrup and powdered sugar.
