A fragrant, sweet loaf of Scandinavian Cardamom Bread that encapsulates comfort and tradition.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, heat the milk, water, and butter until warm, then dissolve the yeast in the mixture.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and cardamom. Make a well in the center and add the warm yeast mixture and eggs.
  3. Mix together until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Punch down the dough, then divide it into three pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and braid them together.
  6. Place the braided dough on a baking sheet. Cover and let rise again for about 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Brush the loaf with beaten egg for shine.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool before slicing.
