Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 pounds beef short ribs
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Season the short ribs generously with salt and pepper to enhance their natural flavors.
  3. Sear the short ribs in a large oven-safe pot with vegetable oil, browning on all sides before removing them from the pot.
  4. Sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic in the same pot until softened.
  5. Pour in the beef broth, red wine, brown sugar, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce, stirring to combine.
  6. Toss in the fresh thyme and bay leaf.
  7. Return the seared short ribs to the pot and cover tightly.
  8. Transfer the pot to the oven and bake for 2.5 to 3 hours, or until fork-tender.
  9. Remove from oven, discard the thyme and bay leaf, and serve with sauce.

Notes

Browning the ribs enhances flavor and color. Use a good quality wine for a better sauce.
