Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour your sheet pan.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well blended.
  3. Boil the Cocoa Mixture: In a saucepan, combine the unsalted butter, water, and cocoa powder. Bring to a rolling boil, then remove from heat.
  4. Combine the Mixtures: Pour the hot cocoa mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until no dry spots remain.
  5. Add Buttermilk, Eggs, and Vanilla: Fold in the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  6. Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into your prepared sheet pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Prepare the Frosting: In a new saucepan, melt some butter and mix it with cocoa powder on low heat.
  8. Blend the Frosting Ingredients: Combine the melted cocoa mixture with powdered sugar and milk until smooth.
  9. Frost and Cool the Cake: Pour the frosting over the warm cake and let it cool slightly before slicing into squares.

Notes

For an extra moist cake, avoid overbaking! You can make your own buttermilk with milk and vinegar. Try adding a teaspoon of instant coffee for a richer chocolate flavor.
