A rich, chocolatey Texas Sheet Cake that’s simple to make and perfect for gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven and prepare the pan. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large sheet cake pan.
  2. Combine dry ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well mixed.
  3. Boil butter and water. In a saucepan, bring the butter and water to a boil.
  4. Stir in cocoa powder. Once your butter and water have come to a boil, stir in the unsweetened cocoa powder.
  5. Mix dry ingredients with wet. Add the boiling mixture to the dry ingredients and mix well.
  6. Whisk together buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  7. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Pour this luscious batter into your prepared pan, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake the cake. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Prepare the frosting. While the cake is baking, prepare the frosting by boiling butter, cocoa, and milk together.
  10. Frost and set. Once the cake is cool, pour the frosting over it and let it set before serving.
