Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for frosting
  • Chocolate shavings or cocoa powder for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Beat the softened butter and sugar until fluffy, then add the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Gradually combine the dry ingredients with the wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes.
  6. Let the cakes cool completely in their pans before removing.
  7. For the frosting, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth, then add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Whip the heavy cream to stiff peaks and fold into the cream cheese mixture.
  8. Assemble the cake by placing one layer on a plate, frosting it, adding the second layer, and frosting the entire cake.
  9. Garnish with chocolate shavings or cocoa powder and chill for about an hour before serving.
